The U.S. Department of Interior will hold a lease sale for 38 million acres offshore Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama on June 20 in New Orleans, the Obama administration announced Thursday.

The department plans 12 lease sales for the Gulf of Mexico’s Outer Continental Shelf for 2012 to 2013 , according to the administration. The lease auctions will make more than 75 percent of the undiscovered, technically recoverable oil and gas on the Outer Continental Shelf available for development.
