Authorities are searching for a man who tried to run over a Louisiana State Police trooper with a pick up Friday morning following a chase through the Valley Park community in between South Acadian Thruway and College Drive.

Jakarta Carter Jones, 35, of Baton Rouge, is wanted on a count of attempted murder of a StateTrooper, State Police Capt. Doug Cain said.

The incident occurred at 2:15 a.m. when the trooper tried to pull over the truck after it pulled out of a gas station at Corporate Boulevard and College Drive, Cain said.

The trooper put on his car lights and the driver of the truck started to accelerate into the Valley Park community, initiating a pursuit through the neighborhood, Cain said.

The truck driver pulled over in a grassy area in between Bawell and Wells streets and the trooper got out of his car to approach the man, Cain said.

The driver of the truck started the truck up again and raced toward the trooper in an attempt to run him over, Cain said.

Fearing for his life, the trooper fired his gun at the truck but the driver got away, Cain said. The trooper was not injured, Cain said.

Later, authorities found the truck abandoned three blocks away from the spot where the trooper was almost run over, Cain said.

A female passenger in the truck was later arrested but the search for the driver of the truck is still under way, Cain said.

State Police is working with the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office and the Baton Rouge Police to find the driver of the truck.

Anyone with information on Jones’ whereabouts is asked to call investigators at (225) 754-8500 or Crimestoppers at (225) 344-7867.
