A 25-year-old Amite man was killed Tuesday night when his car ran off a Tangipahoa Parish road and hit a tree, causing an explosion, according to a Louisiana State Police news release.

The fatal crash that killed Michael Jones Jr. occurred at 10:40 p.m. on La. 1054, two miles south of La. 16.

A preliminary investigation revealed that the crash occurred as Jones was traveling north on La. 1054 in a 2007 Hyundai Sonata when, for unknown reasons, he failed to maneuver a curve in the road and began to run off road to the right, according to the release.

Jones then overcorrected back to the left causing the car to re-enter La. 1054 and continue across the north and southbound lanes before running off road to the left.

The car continued off road on the west side of La. 1054 before hitting the tree with its left front end.

Jones was pronounced dead at the scene by the Tangipahoa Parish Coroner’s Office.

Due to the extent of the fire, seat belt use is unknown, however investigating troopers suspect alcohol impairment to have been a factor in the crash.

A blood sample was obtained from Jones for analysis at the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab.
