KENTWOOD - A manhunt is under way for a rape suspect who escaped from Washington Parish sheriff’s deputies and ran into a wooded area near Kentwood, the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office reported Friday.

Kaunda Lopaz Magee, 36, is accused of aggravated rape; kidnapping; criminal damage to property; and four counts of attempted murder of a police officer, Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Dawn Panepinto said in a news release.

Several agencies are assisting in the search, including St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office; Louisiana State Police; Washington Parish Sheriff’s Office; Franklinton Police, Livingston Parish Sheriff’s Office; state Wildlife and Fisheries, and others, Panepinto said.

Magee escaped at 4 p.m. Thursday, Panepinto said.
