Two Independence residents were killed Thursday night after the van they were in on Interstate 55 in Tangipahoa Parish drifted off the road, hit a guardrail and overturned, according to a Louisiana State Police news release.

The news release gives this account of the incident:

The fatal crash occurred at 7 p.m. two miles south of the La. 442 exit on I-55.

Brandon Sance, 19 was driving the 1991 Dodge Caravan and 22-year-old Kassie Toups was his front seat passenger.

A preliminary investigation revealed that the crash occurred as Sance was traveling southbound on I-55 when, for unknown reasons, the van drifted off road to the left and entered the center grass median.

The Dodge Caravan continued off road in the median for approximately 329 feet before hitting a guardrail directly underneath the La. 1064 overpass.

After striking the guardrail, the van overturned onto its right side and continued forward hitting the overpass support column with its roof.

Both Sance and Toups were pronounced dead at the scene by the Tangipahoa Parish Coroner’s Office.

Both occupants were properly restrained at the time of the crash and alcohol use is not suspected pending the results of a toxicology exam.

The crash remains under investigation, the news release says.
