A 34-year-old Baton Rouge man died after a two-vehicle crash on Interstate 10 east of La. 77 in West Baton Rouge Parish Wednesday evening shortly before 6 p.m., according to a press release from the Louisiana State Police.

Michael W. McCants of Baton Rouge died in the crash. He was driving a 2003 Ford E-250 van east on I-10 while Jose Ruiz, 42, of Hialeah, Fla. was driving a 1999 Freightliner tractor-trailer east on I-10.

Ruiz was driving in the right lane and was slowing down because of traffic congestion in front of him, according to State Police. McCants’ van hit the back of the tractor-trailer and the van ran off the road to the left and came to rest in the median, according to State Police.

McCants was not wearing a seatbelt. Ruiz was wearing his seatbelt and wasn’t injured. Neither driver is suspected of being impaired at the time of the accident, according to the State Police.
