The Baton Rouge Ballet Theatre, celebrating more than 50 years of dance in Baton Rouge, will conduct auditions for The Nutcracker, A Tale from the Bayou, on
Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 17-18, at the Dancers’ Workshop, 10745 Linkwood Court.
Auditions for the production, called the crown jewel of the Baton Rouge holiday scene, will be for both advanced dancers and children between ages 8 and 12. More than 300 children will be selected to fill the roles of lambs, cherubs, mice, cooks, soldiers, angels, bon bons and party children.
The Nutcracker takes the stage for four performances with the Baton Rouge Symphony Orchestra at the Baton Rouge River Center Theatre for the Performing Arts on Dec. 17 and 18.
Audition times are as follows:
•10:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 17, advanced dancers.
•12:45 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 18, boys age 8 and older.
•1:15 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 18, girls age 8 and older.
•2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 18, girls age 9 and older.
•2:45 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 18, girls age 10 and older.
•3:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 18, girls ages 11-12.
Children should wear leotards and tights and arrive at the audition at least 15 minutes before their scheduled audition time. There will be a $5 audition fee per dancer for both advanced dancers and children.
Auditions for advanced dancers will be for classically trained, advanced level dancers on pointe. Advanced dancers selected will perform with the ballet theater’s Senior Company for the 2011-2012 season, which includes The Nutcracker, A Tale from the Bayou; From This Pointe On, Baton Rouge Ballet Theatre’s spring concert and the Southwest Regional Ballet Festival.
In addition, dancers from within the senior company also may be selected for Baton Rouge Ballet Theatre’s Arts-in-Education programs, including Ballet for Children, a professional group which tours local schools.
The Nutcracker, A Tale from the Bayou is a timeless classic complete with dancing mice and falling snow set in familiar Louisiana landmarks.
