Tin Roof to release official LSU beer

Baton Rouge’s Tin Roof plans to release an officially licensed LSU beer, and the company wants Tiger fans to help decide what style beer to brew.

Through Wednesday, the brewery is accepting applications to serve on a tasting panel that will sample eight to 10 test batches. Prospective taste testers can apply at tinroofbeer.com. Testing takes place June 14 and 18.

Also on June 18, the brewery will celebrate the release of its summer seasonal, Watermelon Wheat. A picnic will start at 1 p.m., and the event will feature food, music and a cornhole tournament at 2 p.m.

Varnedoe gets runner-up

At last weekend’s Louisiana Seafood Cook-Off in New Orleans, chef Scott Varnedoe was named runner-up in the quest for the crown.

Varnedoe, of Baton Rouge’s Restaurant IPO, made Asian Cajun Oysters and fell just behind the new King of Louisiana Seafood, Chef Blake Phillips, of Restaurant Sage in Monroe.

Phillips prepared a blackened Sous-vide grouper and fava bean and sweet potato puree with corn, crab and mirliton slaw.

Serop’s Express reopens on Jefferson

It’s a happy day for patrons of Serop’s Express on Jefferson Highway.

The fast-food take on the popular local Greek restaurant reopened on Wednesday in a new location, 8200 Jefferson Highway, with about 400 more square feet and a drive-thru.

Business hours are 10:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
