RELAY FOR LIFE EVENT LEADERSHIP, American Cancer Society — Angela Nantamu, (225) 927-0782: Volunteers are needed to serve as part of a team to plan the local Relay for Life event. Volunteers on the Event Leadership Team will have a specific role which will include anything from recruiting teams, mentoring teams on fundraising, planning logistics of the event, planning entertainment activities and organizing fundraising opportunities for teams. The Event Leadership Team will meet at least monthly until May.

HOME REPAIR FOR SINGLE PARENTS, The Life of a Single Mom — Stefanie Ashford, (225) 341-8055): Serving Other Sisters (S.O.S. Works) provides home repair and improvement for single parent families in the greater Baton Rouge area. Work includes painting, flooring, bathroom, kitchen, roof, yard work, landscaping and house cleaning to ensure health and safety for our single moms and their families.

COMMUNITY GARDEN, Mayor Kip Holden’s BR Proud Initiative — Mitchell Provensal, (225) 267-7152: Weekly volunteers are needed to help maintain community gardens in Northdale, Melrose, Scotlandville and North Baton Rouge. Scheduling is flexible and no experience is required. Volunteers will help do regular maintenance of garden and help harvest produce.

CRISIS CHAT COUNSELOR, Baton Rouge Crisis Intervention Center — Haley Shows, (225) 924-1431: Help those experiencing emotional distress by volunteering to provide crisis intervention and suicide prevention counseling. Crisis Chat is an online instant messaging program that offers an alternative way for people in crisis to reach out for help. Volunteer counselors will receive extensive training in crisis and suicide intervention.

CAT HAVEN ADOPTION, Cat Haven — Melissa Dottley, (225) 636-2680: Help some kitties find a home at PetSmart. Volunteers build relationships with potential adopters and assists them in finding cats that are a good match for their home and lifestyle. This includes educating adopters about Cat Haven’s guidelines and completing applications and other related paperwork. Volunteers may also assist with set-up or takedown of adoption materials at off-site locations. No experience is necessary as a trained adoption counselor will be on hand to assist.
