What a Crock!: Slow-cooked breakfast a good alternative _lowres

Advocate staff photo by PATRICK DENNIS -- Apple Cream Cheese Bagels are an easy, family-pleasing breakfast choice.

How many times have we heard that breakfast is the most important meal of the day? We might know it, but doing something about it can be challenging. It’s easy to bring out the cereal or granola bars, but think about a few alternatives. Make up a batch of apples, cinnamon and nuts in the slow cooker ahead of time and refrigerate.

Take a half-cup or a full cup of the mixture out each morning, heat in the microwave, and top bagels with the warm fruit. It’s quick and easy, plus it gives everyone from schoolchildren and teens to the elderly a good start to the day ahead. Check out some of the flavored cream cheeses to add to your bagel before topping with the cooked fruit. It’s a great addition to the medley of flavors hitting the morning taste buds.

When the Louisiana blueberry fields open for picking, we freeze quart-sized bags for the months ahead. It’s easy to grab a handful or two of blueberries as edible garnish, but if you don’t have them, pick another fruit or just stick with apples. The apple mixture doesn’t take long to cook so keep an eye on it.

Mine was pretty much done in 2 hours, just long enough to merge the flavors but not enough to turn the chopped fruit into mush.
