“Happily Ever After” was the theme for the Krewe of Lyonnesse 18th Annual Mardi Gras Ball on Saturday, Jan. 31.

King Lyonnesse XVIII Samuel Taylor Shapiro and Queen Lyonnesse XVIII Hannah Renee Papizan reigned over the festivities. President Marci Blaize welcomed members and guests to the Royal Hall of Lyonnesse. This year’s Co-ball Captains were Molly Kimble and Whitney Graves. The Rev. Gary Alan White, the queen’s uncle, was the evening’s invocator. Serving as master of ceremonies for the evening was Dale Clary. The opening whistle was blown by USMC Captain Kurt Fallon, and Princess Savannah Taylor performed the National Anthem.

The queen is the daughter of Dr. Stephen and Miranda Papizan. She is a sophomore at Christian Life Academy and is the granddaughter of Ray and Sharon Marler and Larry and Saith Papizan, all of Crystal Springs, Mississippi.

The king is the son of Daniel and Aimee Shapiro and is a freshman in the Distinguished Scholar Program at Houston Christian High School in Houston, Texas. He is the grandson of June Smythe and the late Thomas L. Smythe and Brenda and Nick Romero, all of Baton Rouge, and the late Michael J. Shapiro.

Attendants to the royal couple were Princesses Elizabeth Alexandra Odeh, Sophia Catherine Shapiro, Virginia Elizabeth Truxillo, Prince Benjamin Flynt Papizan and Duke Daniel Joseph Shapiro Jr.

Returning as the 2014 Royal Court were King Grayson Papizan and Queen Maggie Kimble, Prince Max Kimble and Princesses Ann Malloy Kimble and Ramsey Graves. Brian Arceneaux, King Lyonnesse XV, served as Medallion Presenter.

Other past royals in attendance were King Lyonnesse XIII Foster DeGeneres and King Lyonnesse XIV Hays Clary.

The Krewe also recognized this year’s graduating seniors King Lyonnesse XV Brian Arceneaux and Duke Patrick Gaudet.

The mission of the Krewe of Lyonnesse is to celebrate the family, while enjoying southern Louisiana tradition of Mardi Gras. Lyonnesse members are youngsters ages 3 through high school, who take part in its ball processional and ride in the Southdowns Parade. In addition, krewe members participate in community service activities and present an annual tableau for the residents of Williamsburg Retirement Center. Founded in 1996, the Krewe takes its name from the tale of Lyonnesse in the legends of King Arthur.
