Honey is so much more than a sweet, syrupy liquid golden lava that smoothly glides down the bowl of a spoon drizzling onto a hot, fluffy biscuit ... where was I going with this?
Oh, yes. Honey is not only a beautiful natural sweetener, it is also beneficial to your health.
Depending on its variety, natural honey can offer a range of nutritional benefits and acts a healthier alternative or supplement to refined sugars. According to the National Honey Board, a tablespoon of raw honey contains only 64 calories, is fat free, cholesterol free and sodium free. Honey also boasts anti-inflammatory effects and antioxidants that we could all use on occasion.
I recently bought a jar of honey from a local beekeeper and have been using it in just about everything from energy bars to biscuits. You can easily find local honey at farmers markets and grocery stores around town. I made the recipes here this week because I had leftover yolks from angel food cake and we needed a batch of biscuits to get us through the first week of summer camp.
The added honey should give my little ones the boost they need for the week’s adventures.
