One New Orleans restaurant and two chefs have captured 2016 James Beard Foundation awards, it was announced Monday night.

Shaya, on Magazine Street, with its modern Israeli menu, was honored as best new restaurant in the nation. La Petite Grocery’s Justin Devillier won best chef for the Southern region (Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi, Puerto Rico). And Crescent City culinary icon Leah Chase of Dooky Chase’s Restaurant in New Orleans is the Lifetime Achievement Award winner.

The coveted awards, handed out in Chicago, recognize excellence in cuisine, culinary writing, and culinary education in the United States.
