“Dinner Solved!: 100 Ingenious Recipes That Make the Whole Family Happy, Including YOU” by Katie Workman, Workman Publishing, $17.95, 372-page paperback

Family-friendly recipes fill the latest cookbook from Katie Workman. In “Dinner Solved! 100 Ingenious Recipes That Make the Whole Family Happy, Including YOU,” the creator of TheMom100.com tackles the problem of how to make everyone at the dinner table — even the picky eater — happy without turning into a short-order cook.

Most of the new book’s flexible recipes offer at least two versions of the dish. Many have a vegetarian option. In the introduction, Workman says, “The idea is that at some point in its preparation, a dish can be divided with part of it going one way, part of it going another way, so that everyone ends up happy and eating basically the same thing.”

She also offers some basic cooking suggestions from measuring to what items to keep on hand for enhancing the flavor of a dish. Most important, she says, is never assuming your kids won’t like some dish.

Speaking of kids, each recipe also includes suggestions for what the children can do to help with preparing the meal. And, many recipes offer make-ahead ideas.

There are recipes for breakfast food, serious sandwiches, snacks, appetizers, salads, soups and stews, meat, chicken, fish and seafood, burgers and meatballs, one-dish meals, pasta and sauces, tacos and enchiladas, comfort foods, vegetarian and vegetable dishes, cookies, desserts, and sauces and basics.

Workman also includes a chapter called Good Old Carbs, with such dishes as potato gratin and cornbread.

This is a cookbook sure to please busy parents and anyone else who has to cook family-style dinners daily.
