Madagascar trip topic for BR Orchid Society

Tin-Wein Yu and John Nelson, owners of Louisiana Orchid Connection, spoke about their trip to Madagascar, where they photographed rare orchid species, at the Baton Rouge Orchid Society’s January meeting.

Laurie Skov, owner of Orchids and Tropicals Nursery in Santa Fe, Texas, will discuss the species Stanhopea at the society’s meeting at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Burden Center, 4560 Essen Lane. The society meets on the third Wednesday of each month. Other regular events are, for those new to orchids, the Green Growers meeting at 7 p.m. on the second Wednesday of each month at 425 Nelson Drive, and the “Orchids for Seniors” study group at 10 a.m. on the fourth Monday of the month at BREC’s Independence Park.

Mu Sigma holds annual prenatal education fair

Mu Sigma Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority hosted its annual Project CRADLE Care Prenatal Education Fair on Jan. 31 at the sorority house.

The project is a prenatal education and resource program that seeks to improve pregnancy outcomes in high-risk communities by increasing prenatal care and education about proper infant care and child development. Alumnae chapters of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority host the annual prenatal education fair in January in conjunction with National Birth Defects Awareness Month.

Panelists included Tasha Cooper, capital area division director, March of Dimes; Dr. Charles Thomas, executive director, Women’s Help Clinic; Natasha James, owner, Allstar Community Care; Dr. Dawn R. Marcelle, pediatrician; Dr. Joseph Diggs, internal medicine, OBGYN; and Jacqueline Burton, mother.

Burton shared her story and spoke about women who give birth to low-weight or premature babies. Other participants included the Amanda Skinner, Department of Children and Family Services; Kathy Breaux, Women, Infants, and Children program; Theresta Stewart, Family Road of Greater Baton Rouge; Cynthia Miller, Cindy’s Little Angels; 225 Dance Fitness; and Angel Heath, Women’s Help Clinic.

Project committee members were Jacqueline Burton, Elouise Colbert, Melissa Charles, Rochelle Howard, Lyn Hakeem, Shanna Magee, Dr. LaTonya Rounds, Sylvia Smith and Sharon Weatherspoon.
