About a year ago, Baton Rougeans rejoiced when Nick Hufft’s Curbside Burgers returned as part of Barcadia on Highland Road.

While that venture will continue, Hufft has begun work on a new brick-and-mortar location of Curbside in Mid City.

The upcoming Curbside Burgers will be located at 4158 Government St. next door to Calandro’s Supermarket. It will have about 2,900 square feet inside and 800 square feet outside.

Hufft said he is expecting to open in October.

“(Patrons can expect) a neighborhood gathering space serving craft burgers paired with great pints that is served up by people who love what they do,” Hufft said.

Curbside Burgers started as a food truck that was founded in 2010. Quickly, those burgers — such as the K.G.B. with praline bacon and sharp cheddar, and The Brian with fried onion strings, pork belly preserves and blue cheese — became favorites.

After a brief hiatus from the food truck world, Hufft teamed up with Barcadia to bring his burger creations to the New Orleans and Baton Rouge locations of the bar and restaurant.

But the brick-and-mortar location was always on Hufft’s mind.

“I have been working on this project for about two-and-a-half years now,” he said. “There were a lot of hoops to jump through. But if you ask anyone who is in the food truck business, they will tell you the same thing — the ultimate goal is to one day open a brick-and-mortar location.”

When Blaize Calandro, of Calandro’s, approached Hufft about leasing the location, Hufft said he couldn’t believe how perfect it was.

“The traffic count on Government is perfect for a fast, casual concept,” he said. “It’s all in the details. We’re literally deconstructing a food truck and putting it into the dining room with accents of its remains throughout the entire space. I can’t wait to see how it turns out.”
