Iberville Academy junior elected Beta president
Iberville Math Science & Arts Academy East Junior D’Wayne Bell II was elected as Louisiana Senior Beta Club president on Jan. 16 in Lafayette.
Bell ran on a platform to increase the role and relevancy of the Beta Club in the lives of its members. His school’s club gave a musical skit supporting his candidacy for about 7,000 students and educators at the Cajun Dome.
The school is only 4 years old and its Beta Club is in its second year.
Burdette completes Army basic training
Army Pvt. Austin R. Burdette has graduated from Basic Combat Training at Fort Benning, Georgia. Burdette is the son of Donna D. Burdette, of Baton Rouge.
McKowen High School plans April 11 reunion
W.R. McKowen High School, which was renamed Jackson High School in 1962, will hold a reunion at 9 a.m. Saturday, April 11, at the school gym. This is the seventh reunion, with events held every five years. A $15 registration fee is due by March 1. Call Lucy Priddy, (225) 923-0871.
German natives thanks Ex-POWs at meeting
The Red Stick Chapter of the American Ex-Prisoners of War received a surprise on Feb. 3 at Hollywood Casino’s Lauren Bacall Room.
Henrietta McCrary, a German native living in Baton Rouge, visited the meeting to thank POWs who were captured by the Germans. She said it was the first time she had told anyone thanks for her freedom. She had seen a notice about the club’s January meeting in The Advocate.
Members Marion Bahlinger and Calvin Carter said it was the first time anyone had thanked them personally for their freedom. As a teenager, McCrary said she was forced to join the Hitler Youth. She thanked the POWs for helping rescue her country from Adolf Hitler.
Beth Dawson presented a Mardi Gras bingo. Prizes were several containers of Cajun seasoning, red beans and rice mix, and jambalaya mix.
The next meeting will at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 3 at Hollywood Casino.
