Davis, Almond honored by Purple Heart group
World War II veterans Henry Davis and Pat Almond were honored by Military Order of the Purple Heart Chapter 177 on Oct. 4 at the USS Kidd Veterans Museum.
David LaCerte, Louisiana secretary of veterans affairs, presented a state senate resolution honoring their service. Baker Mayor Harold Rideau presented them the keys to the city. Amanda Swanner, aide to U.S. Sen. David Vitter, presented each a flag that had flown over the U.S. Capitol.
Kelfstrom receives honor from alma mater
Runnels Theatre program chair and drama teacher Neena Kelfstrom received the 2014 Distinguished Fine Arts Alumni Award from McMurry University in Abilene, Texas, on Oct. 10. The award honors McMurry alumni who have made significant contributions to their professions and communities.
A theater educator, director and actor in Louisiana and Texas for more than 20 years, Kelfstrom holds a bachelor of arts in theater from McMurry and a master of fine arts in theater with an emphasis in performance from LSU.
She has served as artistic and executive director of Playmakers of Baton Rouge, acted and directed at Theatre Baton Rouge and been active in the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities in the Prime Time for Reading Program. She taught theater as an adjunct professor at LSU and has served as a volunteer reader for Louisiana Voices: Audio Book Program for the Blind.
Blacharski promoted to lieutenant commander
U.S. Coast Guard Reserve Lt. Cmdr. Elaine C. Blacharski was promoted to her current rank Oct. 1. She is stationed at Coast Guard Sector St. Petersburg, Fla.
She is the daughter of Daniel Cherry and Julie Cherry, both of Baton Rouge, and granddaughter of Bruce and Jeanne Tregre, of Baton Rouge. She is a 2000 graduate of Scotlandville Magnet High School and a 2004 graduate of United States Coast Guard Academy.
Ex-POWs watch videos about WWII Louisiana
The Red Stick Chapter of the American Ex-Prisoners of War watched four videos about Louisiana World War II stories on Oct. 7 at Hollywood Casino.
The videos told stories about Dr. Donald Webb, John Isle Jr., Louis Christophe, Anthony Arceneaux, John Conant and the Louisiana Honor Air organization. The chapter will meet at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 2 at Hollywood Casino’s Lauren Bacall Room.
