LAFAYETTE — The Mystic Krewe of Apollo de Lafayette presented its 39th annual Mardi Gras Bal Masque Jan. 31 in the Cajundome Convention Center, with King Apollo XXXIX David Moore and Queen Apollo XXXIX Danny Davis reigning over the festivities.
The theme of Bal Masque XXXIX was “Cirque d’ Apollo” as krewe court members were introduced in extravagant costumes while dazzling the audience with innovative performances, combining the imaginative and creative forces that comprise the new age with the old world circus known as Cirque.
Over 2,600 guests attended the ball, where Dextaci performed the national anthem as Shelley Landry presented the flag.
The ball was dedicated in memory of a recently deceased former member, Queen Apollo VII Jim Feigler.
Mr. and Miss Apollo de Lafayette 2015, Trevor Johnson and Roxie C. Black, were presented along with Mr. and Miss National Apollo 2015, Jonathan Rushing and Amanda Rose Andrews, representing Apollo Baton Rouge. Reigning King XXXVIII Mitch Reed and Queen Apollo XXXVIII Kindrick Benoit made a spectacular entrance as the monarchs of Apollo’s 38th Bal Masque, “Apollo’s Comic Book.”
The Apollo Member Cirque Dancers entertained the crowd. The center of the Cirque d’ Apollo was ball Captain Sherman Mire as “Cirque de Soleil.” Bal Masque Co-Captain Darrell Frugé appeared as the “Aerial Cube Artist,” with partner Conrad Breaux, the “Cube Balancer,” who supported their team. The Bal Masque lieutenants were Emmanuel Gumbs as the “Butterfly Trainer,” Tylor Patin as the “Cirque Juggler” and Garry Breaux as “Zoltar.”
Honor Court members were Chad Terro as “High Kicks,” James Dauzart as the “Human Kite,” Bob Pastor as an “Asian Acrobatics Performance,” Mike Perioux as “Dralion” and Ted Viator as “Condom Girl,” who entertained with her “Condom People.”
Court members represented the talents of the Cirque performance with Brent Meche as “Kooza Trickster,” Ryan Powell with his team as “Wheel Men,” Alton Prejean as the “Silk Aerialist,” while Ryan Humphreys lured the crowd as “Fawn.” The “KA Warrior” was portrayed by Barrett Bertrand and the “Elephant Man” was Mark Maras.
First-year Apollo members on the court were Will Thiele as the “Illusionist-Contortionist,” Adam Trahan as a spinning “Ferris Wheel,” Darren Johnson as “Varekai” and Deason Wagner as the “Cirque Muscle Man.” Kenlie Andrews was “Pop Corn,” with “Peanuts” by Ben Boudreaux and Scott Meddows as “Bear Juggler.”
The crowd was entertained by a krewe production of “Cirque d’ Apollo Tumblers” and “Those Humps” production. “Mistress of Seduction” as represented by Roxie C. Black, Miss Apollo 2015, and Mr. Apollo 2015 Trevor Johnson was the specular “Tumbling Trio.”
King Apollo XXXIX Moore was the main Cirque performer as the “Imperial King of Cirque d’ Apollo.” Queen Apollo XXXIX Davis appeared as the highlight of the night.
Director for the production was Rebecca Landry; choreographer was Jade Landry Gauthreaux, of Gerami Academy, and master of ceremonies was John ”JayCee” Falcon. The officers and board of directors for 2014-2015 are President Phillip LeBlanc, Vice President Mitch Reed, Secretary Rusty Phillips, Treasurer Danny Davis, Historian David Moore, Members-at-Large Kevin Doerr and Tylor Patin, and Captain Sherman Mire. Phillip LeBlanc and Timothy Lege manage the krewe’s website and organized the guest list for the ball.
