The Eclectic Truth Poetry Slam will be host for Baton Rouge’s first-ever multi-team regional slam tournament, The Red Stick Regional.
The event will take place Saturday at the Arts Council of Greater Baton Rouge, 427 Laurel St. The one-day tournament will showcase some of the best youth and adult poetry slam teams of the southwest region, according to Eclectic Truth’s Donney Rose.
A poetry slam is an Olympic-style poetry competition founded in the 1980s. Poets are judged on the written and performance merit of original compositions. In the team slam format, teams of four to five poets compete in four rounds of poetry with the winners being the team with the highest cumulative score.
The Red Stick Regional will host two preliminary “bouts” of competition, with each bout consisting of four teams. The top two scoring teams from each bout will make up the four teams to compete in the finals later in the evening.
Preliminary bouts will take place at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. and are free to the public. The finals will start at 8 p.m., with admission of $10.
The tournament will field teams from Houston (Houston VIP, Write About Now and MetaFour Houston), New Orleans (Slam New Orleans), Bryan, Texas (Mic Check) and Baton Rouge (Eclectic Truth, Forward Arts All Star Youth Team and a pick up team of local poets), Rose said.
The Eclectic Truth Poetry Slam and Open Mic is a weekly event organized by Baton Rouge spoken word collective, The Poetry Alliance. Held 7:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. on Tuesday nights at the Arts Council, the organizers of Eclectic Truth are also part of the organizing body of The Red Stick Regional.
