LSU Cadets director speaks to MOWW
Cadets of the Ole War Skule Executive Director Randy Gurie spoke to the Baton Rouge-Lt. Gen. Troy H. Middleton Chapter of the Military Order of the World Wars on April 2 at the City Club.
Gurie spoke on the history of the LSU Cadet Corps and its role in supporting the nation and university through its Reserve Officer Training Corps.
The chapter honored those who had served as chapter commander. Seven past commanders were present. The chapter supports local high school JROTC and college ROTC programs throughout Louisiana with annual Outstanding Cadet Awards.
Groups celebrate Stork’s Nest opening
Omicron Sigma Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority partnered with the Louisiana Chapter of the March of Dimes and the Dr. Leo S. Butler Community Center to re-open the Stork’s Nest on March 30.
Stork’s Nest is a prenatal education program operated by the sorority in partnership with the March of Dimes and cooperating community agencies. The program provides incentives for women to keep prenatal care appointments. The Stork’s Nest program targets pregnant women in the area, especially African-American women, in an effort to reduce infant mortality and health disparities among this population.
The event included a rededication program with District 10 Councilwoman Tara Wicker, Dr. Leo S. Butler Community Center Executive Director Sherman G. Ruth and Makesha L. Judson, March of Dimes State director of program services and governmental affairs.

Yard mulch topic for BSP chapter
Page Meyer spoke on the types and uses for yard mulch when Laureate Alpha Gamma Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi met on April 2 at Virginia Huffman’s home.
Service Committee chairwoman Marilyn Mayeux said supplies for the Yelp shelter and food for the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank would be delivered that week. Jean Leyda said her son, Doug, has been chosen one of 75 distinguished alumni recognized in celebration of the LSU School of Social Work’s 75th anniversary.
Social Committee chairwoman Dixie Gregory said the Woman of the Year-Mother’s Day Luncheon will be held Tuesday at J. Alexander’s Restaurant.
