Music Club conducts spring recital program

The Music Club of Baton Rouge held its last recital program of the season, “Sounds of Spring,” May 12 at the Woman’s Club.

Iris Domestic Violence Center receives grant

The Iris Domestic Violence Center received a $50,000 contribution to assist with its Rural Victims Domestic Violence Outreach Program on May 13 from the Walmart Foundation’s State Giving Program.

The center serves 150 women and children across five rural parishes, providing emergency shelter, opening offices for direct help in these rural areas and ensuring the victims can get to critical meetings and appointments.

The Walmart program supports organizations that create opportunities so people can live better. Last year, the Louisiana State Giving Program awarded more than $750,000 to local organizations.

Eligible applicants must have a current 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status. Information about the program’s funding guidelines and application process are available online at foundation.walmart.com/apply-for-grants/state-giving.

Zeta Phi Beta honors fifth-grade scholars

Seventy fifth-graders from the East Baton Rouge Parish and Baker school systems were honored by Zeta Phi Beta Sorority on May 3 at Camphor Memorial United Methodist Church.

Area teachers receive STEM Educator Awards

Five Capital Region teachers received BRAC Excellent STEM Educator Awards from the Baton Rouge Area Chamber May 12 in conjunction with its Signature Speaker event.

Recipients were: Elkhan Akhundov, Kenilworth Science and Technology Charter; Ingrid Cruz, Scotlandville Pre-Engineering Magnet Academy; Justin Davenport, West Feliciana High School; Daniel Eiland, Woodlawn High School; and Heather Howle, West Feliciana Middle School.

The honorees received $200 cash awards. A subcommittee of BRAC’s Education and Workforce Issue Council, consisting of business leaders, formed the selection committee.

ExxonMobil and Jones Walker sponsored the competition.

Guo graduates from Army basic training

Army Spc. Rui Guo has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. Guo is the son of Mingyan Xu, of Baton Rouge, and earned a master’s degree in 2014 from LSU.
