When Baton Rouge comedians O'Mar Finley and Nam Vu created the first No Show comedy concert at The Guru, it was supposed to be a one-off date.
"We thought that we might do it monthly, then it happened, and I was like, 'Oh wow,' " Finley said. "There were so many people there, so we thought, 'Let's do it a month from now.' "
A month grew into two months, then five ... by next week, it will have been a yearlong slate of monthly shows. Vu and Finley will celebrate the one-year anniversary with a special show at 8:30 p.m. Monday. Cover is $10, $5 for comedians and patrons wearing a No Show shirt.
Though the first No Show was an open mic full of local talent, the showcases grew featuring scheduled performers. Monday's show will feature Bruno Millalaf, Terence Delaine, Maggie Shipley, Reggie Varice and headliner Howard Hall. Vu and Finley will host the show.
"I wanted to have something that people will look forward to," Finley said. "I wanted this to be a really good, fun show they can have ... a staple of the community."
Even with the success of the monthly shows, Finley still can't believe it's been a year since that first time.
"I almost got caught off guard honestly," he said. "We've watched it grow and develop and mature over the past year. I'm super thankful for the people who keep supporting it and coming out."
