The Krewe of Orion’s Masquerade got underway as its 18th annual parade rolled through the River Center Exhibition Hall, where several hundred guests awaited.
Reigning over the Jan. 30 festivities were King Orion XVIII David Renoud and Queen Orion XVIII Crystal Coppola, wife of krewe member Chad Coppola.
The black-tie gala opened with the appearances of krewe Captain Darren Coates and President Charles Harvey. This year’s theme, “Orion Jet Sets,” was introduced with the arrival of the title float, whose lieutenants are board members Brian Banta and Dustin Brown, and Christopher Rosendahl. Its entrance into the River Center signaled the introduction of the 2016 Royal Court.
Next was the maids float. Representing Cabo San Lucas was Mary Katherine Arotin, daughter of Marie and Jasper Brock. Representing Monte Carlo was Mary Margaret “Maggie” Calandro, daughter of Dorothy and Raymond Calandro.
Riding with the queen on her float were her Pages Kindal Renée and Taylor Ann Coates, daughters of Shelley and Dean Coates, and Emma Rose Leger, daughter of Jessica and David Leger, of Lafayette.
Riding with the king on his float were Pages Chase Joseph Coppola, son of Crystal and Chad Coppola; Brennan Scott Rosendahl, son of Angele and Christopher Rosendahl; and Dalton Junis Rousselle, son of Robin and Darryl Rousselle.
Following the king’s float were: “Monte Carlo,” with float lieutenants Chad Lemaire and Renoud; “Rock-N-Roll” and “A Trip to the Northeast,” with lieutenants Paul Vaught Jr., Eric Guerin, Marty Horn and Edward Wedge IIII; “Orion’s Sword & Shield,” with lieutenants Andrew Bonanno, Gerald Fabre, board member Mike Fontenot, Thad Foreman, P.D. Hill, Lee Hunsucker, Bryan Kutz and Ronald Lebouef; “Cabo San Lucas,” with lieutenants Joseph Johnston and Norman Browning; a special charity float with Family Helping Families; “Broadway,” with lieutenant Kevin Denoux; “Bordeaux France,” with lieutenants Kyle Smith and James Warren; “The Big Easy,” with lieutenants Chad Coppola and Bryan Jeansonne; “Carnival Cats,” with lieutenants Bill Bauder, Jason Morris and Chris Sadler; and “Orion’s Last in Line,” with lieutenant Chad Reynolds.
Krewe board members also include Frank Coates, Bobby Hilburn, Gary O’Neal, Larry Rosendahl, Rick White and Josh Wilkinson.
Mistress of ceremonies for the evening was Whitney Vann. Court and krewe costumes were designed and executed by Karen Massett, of Masquerade Costumes of New Orleans.
