On July 11, the Louisiana Department of Children and Family Services launched a toll-free number where child abuse or neglect can be reported from anywhere in the state.
The number, 1-855-4LA-KIDS (1-855-452-5437) will allow callers to talk to a trained child welfare worker at any time, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Reporters of child abuse are kept private and confidential, by law.
Local law enforcement offices can also be contacted about known or suspected cases of child abuse.
Below is a partial list of Baton Rouge area law enforcement offices:
• Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office, (985) 369-7281.
• Baton Rouge Police Department, (225) 389-2000.
• East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office, (225) 389-5000.
• Children’s Advocacy Centers coordinate all the professionals — legal, social services and medical — who work with a case of child abuse. To find the nearest center, contact the National Children’s Alliance at http://www.nca-online.org or call 1-800-239-9950.
There are also national child abuse helplines staffed with people trained to deal with questions about suspected child sexual abuse.
One is the helpline of the Darkness to Light organization, 1-866-367-5444. Another is the Childhelp USA National Child Abuse Hotline, 1-800-4-A-CHILD.
