James Achee and Alex Bates reigned as king and queen of the Livonia Carnival Association’s Mardi Gras parade which rolled on Feb. 15.

Achee is a lifelong resident of Livonia and is a 1982 graduate of Catholic High School of Pointe Coupee. He is married to the former Lori Beth Bizette, and they are the parents of Brandon “Stump” Achee, who is married to Jessica Dees Achee; Kristen Andre, who is married to Jake Andre, and T.J. “Ferd” Achee. Their grandchildren are Addyson and Ayden Achee, and Finn Andre.

He is the son of the late Leroy Achee Sr. and the late Janet Glaser Achee.

Achee is the owner of Achee’s Automotive in Livonia. For the past 32 years, he has been a member of the Lottie-Livonia Lions Club, where he currently serves as president. Achee is also a member of the Bayou State Rabbit Hunters Federation, where he has served as vice president for the last two years.

Achee, along with his family, is actively involved with the Janell Legier LaCombe Memorial Fundraiser, which helps support cancer patients throughout the parish, and he supports the Coeds for Corey and Cody Gueho Cancer Fundraiser, which helps raise money for St. Jude.

Achee’s father, Leroy Achee Sr., reigned as king of the 1987 Livonia Parade, and his brother, Leroy Achee Jr., reigned as king of the 2003 Livonia Parade.

Bates is the daughter of Charles Ray Bates and Angel Bates, of Livonia. She is the granddaughter of Lucy Bates, of Fordoche, and the late Wayne Bates and Peggy Chustz, of Livonia, and the late Steven “Tootie” Chustz.

In 2014 she graduated as salutatorian from Livonia High School, where she served as president of Student Council, was on the 2013 Homecoming Court and was voted into the Hall of Fame as Most Likely to Succeed. She was also a member of Beta and Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Before graduating, Bates was awarded the Sheriff’s Scholarship and First Student Scholarship as well as numerous subject awards.

Bates is attending LSU, where she is majoring in biology. She hopes to become a pediatrician.
