LA CURE receives legislative update
State Rep. Patricia Smith, D-Baton Rouge, spoke about upcoming legislation to LA CURE (Louisiana Citizens United for the Rehabilitation of Errants) on Feb. 19 at Catholic Charities.
Topics included the governor’s initiative to revamp the juvenile justice system, the lack of mental health treatment, the elimination of state income tax and its effect on lower-income households, and revamping of the state retirement system.
Smith said she plans to introduce bills to allow felons to vote while on probation and parole, differentiate the sentencing for those convicted of aiding and abetting, versus the principal offender and a resolution to allow parish prison pre-trial inmates the opportunity to vote.
The next scheduled monthly meeting is 7 p.m. Tuesday at Catholic Charities.
The annual LA CURE workshop, open to all members and guests, will be March 23 at the Bishop Robert E. Tracy Center, 1800 S. Acadian Thruway.
La. Museum Friends holds board meeting
Louisiana State Museum Friends held its monthly board meeting on Feb. 19 at the Capitol Park Museum. Robert Wheat, deputy assistant director of the Office of State Museums, was a guest.
President Frances Bennett thanked Ben and Ashley Pierce for coordinating the Mardi Gras party at the museum for Friends members. Ben Pierce reported that three new members joined the group on the day of the party.
Museum Division Director Bill Stark announced that the March Lunchtime Lagniappe Lecture Series will begin on March 6. Lana Venable discussed the museum fundraiser scheduled for June 8.
