Here are the general guidelines for obtaining a marriage license in Louisiana:

Applications must be made in person by both parties. Applicants are asked to arrive at all offices at least 30 minutes before closing.

A license obtained in Louisiana can be used only in Louisiana. Applicants need not be residents of Louisiana.

There is a 72-hour waiting period between the time a license is issued and when the marriage can be performed. Licenses are valid for 30 days from the date of issuance.

Applicants are encouraged to complete the online application worksheet (see website) prior to arriving to save time.
