JOIN THE FUN, Girls on the Run — Michele Dunbar at Volunteer are needed for the Girls on the Run 5K Celebration on Dec. 13 at Pennington Biomedical Research Center. This 5K is the culminating event in the program that inspires girls to be joyful, healthy and confident through many activities, including running games. Volunteers are needed to help with set up, pre-run activities, passing out water, cheering on and directing the girls along the course and clean up afterward.

VITA VOLUNTEER TRAINING, Capital Area United Way — Jillian Sergio, (225) 382-3507 or The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program helps low-to-moderate income families by providing free tax preparation assistance. CAUW offers free training on tax preparation for those interested in volunteering.

CHRISTMAS VOLUNTEERS, BREC— Monica Dugas, (225) 272-9200, ext. 446. Volunteers are needed Thursday, Dec. 11, for BREC’s fifth annual Caroling in City Park. There will be a park-lighting ceremony, candlelight caroling and a host of other family activities for all ages.

CRISIS CHAT COUNSELOR, Baton Rouge Crisis Intervention Center — Haley Shows, (225) 924-1431: Help those who may experience emotional distress by volunteering with BRCIC to provide crisis intervention and suicide prevention counseling. Crisis Chat is an online instant messaging program that offers an alternative way for people in crisis to reach out for help. Volunteer counselors will receive extensive training in crisis and suicide intervention.

HOSPITAL VOLUNTEER, Baton Rouge General Hospital — Katherine Neal, (225) 387-7079. Volunteers are needed for the surgery waiting area to greet and check in family members of patients and keep them informed of progress and any special consults. Volunteers will also escort patients and visitors to different areas of the hospital.

RELAY FOR LIFE EVENT LEADERSHIP, American Cancer Society — Angela Nantamu, (225) 927-0782: The American Cancer Society needs volunteers to serve as part of the Event Leadership Team to plan the local Relay for Life event. Volunteers will have a specific role, such as recruiting teams, mentoring teams on fundraising, planning logistics of the event, planning entertainment activities or organizing fundraising opportunities. The team will meet at least monthly until May 2015.
