King Dr. Darrin Breaux and Queen Lisa Anton reigned over the 29th annual Karnival Krewe de Louisiane Ball on Friday, Jan. 22, at the Baton Rouge River Center.
The theme, “A Night on the Nile,” was set with the iconic pyramids of Giza, the desert below and a beautiful Egyptian sunset.
Board President Trent Bondy welcomed guests, corporate ball associates and krewe members and announced Grand Marshall Victor Howell.
Ball Captain Scott McKnight was the tableau host. Presented were Duke Dr. Blaine Anthony Thomas and Duchess Amie Dugas Walker; Duke Thomas H. Gose Jr. and Duchess Alysia Patterson Graves; Duke Timothy James Poché and Duchess Cherie Chustz Lemoine; Duke Dr. Brandon Scott St. Amant and Duchess Dr. Erin Smith Thibault.
The tableau culminated with the presentation of the krewe’s 2014 debutante coterie with their escorts: Caroline Paige Babin escorted by her father, Dr. Kevin Babin; Susanna Katalina Bilbao, escorted by her father, Gilberto Bilbao; Lauren Kate Foshee escorted by her father, Ronald Foshee; Cecilia Angelle Fuller, escorted by her father, Neal Fuller; Claire Christiana Gregoire, escorted by her father, Victor Gregoire; Lillian Roques Mayhall, escorted by her uncle, Thomas W. Kleinpeter; Mary Grace Miller, escorted by her father, Jeffery T. Miller; Michaela Mary Mitchell, escorted by her father, Dr. Horace Mitchell; Ava Claire Perego, escorted by her father, Dr. Alan Perego; Ava Catherine Politz, escorted by her father, Russell Politz; Ashley Marie Roy, escorted by her father, Sanford Roy; Avery Elizabeth Talbot, escorted by her father, Kevin Talbot; Amelia Aline Talbot, escorted by her father, Todd Talbot; and Madelyn Kaye Wilks, escorted by her father, Mark Wilks.
Highlighting the event was the unveiling of a $190,000 check, representing the krewe’s yearlong fundraising effort to benefit cancer patients in the community. Bondy presented the check to representatives from the Mary Bird Perkins - Our Lady of the Lake Cancer Center, which the krewe selected as the recipients of this year’s donation. Also on stage for the presentation were members of the Lane family of Gerry Lane Enterprises, presenting sponsor of the event.
The tableau was followed by a Mardi Gras second line around the exhibition hall and the krewe’s parade, where the king and queen rode in an ornately carved Egyptian sedan.
The McKinley High School Marching Band led by Director Frank Williams and Scotlandville High School Marching Band led by Director I. Roussell filled the room with drumbeats and animated marching. Other parade participants included Al Azar Grotto B Patrol, Honda Gold Wing Riders, iHeart Media, the Baton Rouge Fire Department, the Baton Rouge Dazzlers Dance Team, the McKinley High School JROTC led by Master Sgt. Scarlet Boyd, Guaranty Broadcasting, and East Baton Rouge Parish Motorcycle Deputies.
The grand marshal, ball captain and the dukes and duchesses rode in convertibles courtesy of Gerry Lane Enterprises as the debutantes and their escorts followed in seven beautiful brightly colored Mardi Gras floats.
At the conclusion of the parade, the “After 8” band took the main stage and had the crowd dancing and reveling until midnight.
