Advocate staff photo by PATRICK DENNIS -- Serve Cane Pecan Sauce over slices of homemade or store-bought pound cake.

If there’s ever a good time to throw caution, or should we say calories, to the wind, it’s during Christmas. As my late mother-in-law was so fond of saying, “I’m going to start my diet tomorrow.”

So, when the presents are opened and most of the dishes are put away, it’s time for dessert.

This sauce is the perfect topper for pound cake.

We typically take a break before dessert, but if you prefer otherwise, this recipe can be timed fairly easily by slow cooker standards.

Start the slow cooker before you serve the main course, and it will be ready immediately after dinner.

Want to wait? Just as you are finishing up dinner, set the cooker to start and it will be ready in a couple of hours for you to enjoy with your cake and coffee.

So get out that family recipe for pound cake, because this Cane Pecan Sauce will be great with it.
