Audubon DAR sponsors Capitol wreath event
The John James Audubon Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution sponsored the Wreaths Across America Statehouse Ceremony Dec. 7 in the State Capitol rotunda, placing a wreath donated by the Worcester Wreath Co.
Regent Margaret Tyler and chapter members led the ceremony. Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3784 provided a color guard. John Gray performed the National Anthem and “God Bless America” with vocalist Angela Smith. Veterans and other DAR chapter members attended.
Sam Caruso, a Vietnam War veteran, shared a holiday memory of his time while serving. He explained the custom of leaving an empty chair covered with a banner to remember all POW-MIAs. An empty chair was placed in front of the lectern during the ceremony.
State capitols across the country kicked off Wreaths Across America events by placing a wreath simultaneously at each state capitol. The fresh balsam fir wreath contained small flags representing each branch of the military.
