DETAILS: Theme for the event is “Education: Grandparents Raising Grandchildren — Where the Learning Begins.” Marlon Cousin, an SU graduate and coordinator of Title I for East Baton Rouge Parish schools, will speak at 9:30 a.m. Workshops on such topics as Internet safety, career choices for students, parent access and counseling for adolescents will be from 10:30 a.m. to 11:20 a.m. and repeated from 11:30 a.m. to 12:20 p.m. A legal panel will be from 12:45 p.m. to 2 p.m., and exhibit booths will be available from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

GFWC fundraiser

Enjoy an afternoon of “Fun, Food and Fashion” for a good cause.

WHAT: The GFWC Lagniappe Woman’s Club’s annual fundraiser.

DETAILS: The afternoon will include a luncheon, fashion show with local firefighters escorting models in Coldwater Creek apparel, vendors, raffles and a silent auction. Comedian Harold Hall is the featured entertainment. Proceeds will go to the Baton Rouge General Medical Center Burn Center Pediatric Patient Program.

‘Safe Children’

Early childhood and school safety are the focus.

WHAT: 2013 Academic Distinction Fund’s Distinguished Speaker Series lecture, “Safe Children. Safe Classrooms. Safe Schools. — Making Safety a Priority in Early Childhood Environments.”
