LAFAYETTE — Gabriel LXXVI P.J. Voorhies and Evangeline LXXVI Ann-Riley Lane, daughter of Clif and Marianne Louise Excuriex Lane, reigned over the Grand Ball of the Southwest Louisiana Mardi Gras Association Mardi Gras evening.
The Heymann Performing Arts and Convention Center stage, depicting a palace ballroom, provided the backdrop as members of the Royal Court took their bows.
The ball began with the presentation of the crest of The Greater Southwest Louisiana Mardi Gras Association. The entrance of King Gabriel was followed by the queen, who was escorted by her father, Clif Lane, president of the Greater Southwest Louisiana Mardi Gras Association.
Voorhies, the son of the late Pothier Jean Voorhies and Pauline “Billie” Voorhies Oheiim, is a lifelong resident of Lafayette. He is married to the former Rebecca Evelyn Barnes, and they have two children, Pothier Jean Voorhies IV and Lindsey Voorhies Billeaud, who is married to Joshua Seth Billeaud.
The king, a graduate of Lafayette High School and the University of Southwestern Louisiana, has served as president of the Lafayette Little League; a volunteer for the Lafayette High and University of Louisiana at Lafayette baseball fundraisers and the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure and has supported St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital for 35 years.
Voorhies has been a member of the Krewe of Gabriel since 1987. He is a past president and is a current board member of the Greater Southwest Louisiana Mardi Gras Association and presently serves as chairman of the Dukes Committee. He is a past commodore and current board member of the Krewe of Gabriel. He is a past Royal Duke of the Krewe of Attakapas and served as King Lacassine XXXI in 1999. He was presented as a Royal Honor Duke to King Gabriel LXVIII in 2007 on behalf of the Greater Southwest Louisiana Mardi Gras Association.
The queen is the granddaughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Clifton Ralph Lane and the late Lionel August Escuriex Jr. and Louise Irene Bernard.
She attended Cathedral-Carmel School and St. Thomas More Catholic High School, where she graduated in 2014. She is a freshman at LSU, where she is majoring in psychology and is a member of Phi Mu Sorority.
In 2010, Lane reigned as Queen Guinevere XXVI for the Krewe of Camelot. She has served as Greater Southwest Louisiana Mardi Gras Association jester to the court of the king in 2011 and 2012. She was presented as a debutante in the Krewe of Gabriel Fall Presentation Ball in 2013, and, in 2014, she reigned as the 60th Queen of Les Brigands de Lafitte.
The queen’s father is a member of the Krewe of Bonaparte and served as Le Premier of the Krewe of Bonaparte in 2011. He was the Marquis De Lafayette Captain in 2009. In 2012, he was an Honor Duke to King Gabriel LXXIII. He has been a member of the board of the Greater Southwest Louisiana Mardi Gras Association since 2006 and currently serves as president.
Serving as Royal Honor Dukes to the king were Dr. Richard Broussard and Kyle Gideon.
Royal Dukes serving the king were Joel Babineaux, Martin Bech, Ronald Boustany, R.J. Boutte, Glenn Courville, Paul Eason, Dr. Lige Dunaway, Gregory Gossen, James Mallia and John Mendell.
Presented as Honor Maids to the queen were Colleen Broussard, daughter of Dr. Richard and Kim Broussard, and Caroline Blanchet, daughter of Thomas and Rachel Blanchet.
Maids to the queen were Amy Babineaux, daughter of Joel and Elizabeth Babineaux; Ginnie Bech, daughter of Martin and Michelle Bech; Gracie Boustany, daughter of Ron and Michele Boustany; Camille Courville, daughter of Glenn and Kelly Courville; Elizabeth Domingue, daughter of Richard and Leslie Domingue; Elise Dunaway, daughter of Dr. Lige and Michelle Dunaway; Grier Gossen, daughter of Greg and Carla Gossen; Ashley Herrera, daughter of Juan and Allison Herrera; Audrey Mallia, daughter of James and Lisa Mallia; and Margaret McCarron, daughter of Dr. Ken and Mari McCarron.
Pages to the king were Gannon Domingue, son of Jonathan and Kellie Domingue, and Noah Justus, son of Charles and Maggie Justus.
Pages to the queen were Hayes Trahan, son of Brandon and Aimee Trahan, and John Foard, son of Robert and Carrie Foard.
When members of the court were assembled following the Grand March, Gabriel LXXV Dr. Richard Bourgeois and Evangeline LXXV Elizabeth Koke were presented.
Court Jester Elizabeth Bourgeois is the daughter of Marcel and Lauren Bourgeois. Set design and construction for the ball was by Joel Theriot.
