Puerto Rico’s Caribe Hilton is sharing what it says is the original Piña Colada, Puerto Rico’s official drink.
Its famed Piña Colada recipe turns 60 next month, just a few weeks after National Piña Colada Day, which was July 10. The hotel is hosting a Piña Colada festival on Aug. 16 to kick off its year long festivities.
Caribe Hilton says its Oasis Bar is where bartender Ramón “Monchito” Marrero created the coconut, pineapple and rum drink in 1954 and continued to blend it there until his retirement 35 years later.
However, there is some controversy about who actually first concocted the drink. The Barrachina in Old San Juan says it is the birthplace of the popular drink, that bartender Don Ramon Portas first made the drink there in 1963. And, another Puerto Rican bartender — this one, like Marrero, a Caribe Hilton employee — also claimed ownership of the Piña Colada.
