The Krewe of Okeanos set sail through troubled waters in “The Curse of Da Aztec Gold” at its 37th annual Mardi Gras Ball on Jan. 30 at the Carl F. Grant Civic Center in Plaquemine.
The Pirate Lord of the Caribbean Sea, Calico Jack Rachman, portrayed by ball Captain Vincent Orcino, helped the pirate dukes and their maids navigate the treacherous seas to return the Aztec gold to its rightful place, release the pirate curse and calm the bodies of water under control of the Aztec goddess Chalchiuhticue. Portraying that goddess was Queen Tethys XXXVII Natalie Elaine Orcino, daughter of the ball captain and wife Tonya Orcino. Reigning alongside her was King Okeanos XXXVII Ronald James Gourgues, portraying the Pirate King Black Beard.
The night’s festivities began with the introduction of last year’s royal court and krewe board of directors by emcee Risley St. Germain. They were followed by the ball captain and this year’s king and queen. Pages to the king were his grandchildren, Chandler Paul and Caden James Courtade, sons of Joni and Shannon Courtade. Pages to the queen were cousins Amelie Grace, Maddie Alanna and Shelbie Faith Dupont, daughters of Brittany and Devon Dupont.
They were followed by the pirate dukes and maids. Representing the Far East was the Pirate Lord of the Pacific Ocean, Jason Anthony Canella, cousin of krewe member Mike Campbell and wife Tia, and Mickayla Victoria Vicknair, daughter of Gina and Stephen Vicknair.
Next was the Pirate Lord of the Indian Ocean, Stephen Hunter Orcino, son of Tonya and Vincent Orcino, and Nöell Lynn Gueho, daughter of Trish Sanchez Gueho.
They were followed by the Pirate Lord of the Caspian Sea, Steven Craig Diamond, and Christen Nicole Diamond, children of Brigette and Steven Diamond.
Portraying the Pirate Lord of the Mediterranean Sea was Shannon Paul Courtade, son-in-law of Johnette and Ronald Gourgues, escorting Kelsie Marie Babin, daughter of Deserie and Leonard Babin.
Next came the Pirate Lord of the Adriatic Sea, Joey Dwayne Stein, and his cousin, Kylee Ann Brown, daughter of Lora and Dale Brown.
The last pirate to appear was the Pirate Lord of the Atlantic Ocean, Ronald “P-Nut” Richard, son-in-law of Johnette and Ronald Gourgues, escorting Chloe Madison Richard, daughter of Cynthia Williamson and niece of krewe member Judge William and Mary Dupont.
Guests were entertained during the tableau with the musical merrymaking of several members dressed as Bob Marley and the Whalers as well as the children of the krewe representing pirate scallywags.
