Dietitians from Pennington Biomedical Research Center will join with Alexander’s Highland Market to offer an interactive educational experience entitled “Eating Well with Diabetes: It’s all about balance.”

The hands-on cooking demo and tour of the store, located at 18111 Highland Road, Baton Rouge, is scheduled for 10-11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 14. It’s free, but advanced registration is required. Sign up at or call (225) 615-7800.

The aim is to help people in the community live well with their diabetes.

Get ready to savor the flavors of summer as the dietitians prepare diabetic-friendly pesto shrimp kebobs and herb-ed quinoa while sharing tips and tricks on how to flavor food without adding extra calories. They’ll also offer insight on the importance of balancing healthy eating for good diabetes control, how to fit a wide variety of healthy carbohydrates into a daily meal plan and discuss lean proteins, whole grains, dairy, fruits and vegetables.

Following the cooking demonstration, dietitians will offer an in-depth store tour of the best foods to choose to maximize flavor while managing diabetes and provide an up close look at nutrition labels. Alexander’s Highland Market, which uses the NuVal system of nutritional labeling of groceries, will provide materials .
