NOWFE event to honor founders of Drago’s
The New Orleans Wine & Food Experience will honor Drago and Klara Cvitanovich, founders of Drago’s Seafood Restaurant, with the 2014 Ella Brennan Lifetime Achievement in Hospitality Award.
The award gala is set for Nov. 13 at the National World War II Museum, U.S. Freedom Pavilion: The Boeing Center.
The award recognizes someone each year who has made “a lifetime commitment to the hospitality industry through extraordinary leadership, personal and professional accomplishments and philanthropic contributions to the community. Past recipients include chefs Paul Prudhomme and Leah Chase and philanthropist Bill Goldring.
Tickets to the event are available at nowfe.com for $150 per person. Proceeds will benefit the many local nonprofit organizations NOWFE supports throughout the year.
Gumbo, potato salad competition planned
River Rats Bar and Grille, 14365 Mecca Road, French Settlement, is hosting a gumbo and potato salad cook-off and sale beginning at 7 a.m. Nov. 22 to benefit the Dreams Come True Foundation.
It is seeking contestants for both contests. Entry fee is $50 for the gumbo contest and $20 for the potato salad contest. Deadline to enter is Nov. 19.
Gumbo competitors must cook at least 3 gallons of any type gumbo on site although some preparations may be done the night before.
Gumbos must be turned in for judging at 11:30 a.m. Food will be sold to the public beginning at 11:30 a.m. Trophies and money will be awarded to the top three cooks.
For the potato salad contest, competitors must use at least 1 dozen eggs and 10 pounds of potatoes. Entries must be ready at 11 a.m. and can be prepared at home. The top three entries will receive a trophy.

Medical Center seeks chili cook-off entries
Lane Regional Medical Center in Zachary is seeking team entries for its upcoming Code Red Chili Cook-off, which will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 15 at the Americana Development in Zachary.
The inaugural event will benefit projects of LaneRMC Foundation, such as cancer treatment services at the new Radiation Oncology Center on Lane’s campus, a news release said.
Team entry is $25.
Celebrity judges will name the Best Chili champion and guests will vote for the People’s Choice award. Admission to the event will be free, but chili tastings will be $1 each. In addition, for $100 per person, a VIP area will be offering exclusive craft beer tastings from local brewing clubs, food and music.

La. Culinary Institute plans cooking classes
Louisiana Culinary Institute, 10550 Airline Highway, Baton Rouge, is offering fall cooking classes.
Among them is “New Orleans Favorites” at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 11. Chef Colt Patin, will demonstrate how to prepare New Orleans barbecue shrimp and grits, chicken and sausage gumbo, and fresh catfish sauce piquante.
