More than 200 students from local schools are getting the chance to hear Baton Rouge Symphony performances for free.

The symphony’s “Musical Gateways Passport” program, underwritten by Investar Bank, provides free admission for a student and one accompanying adult, along with free parking at the River Center. It is good for one season and allows admission to three of the Baton Rouge Symphony’s Masterworks series and three concerts by the Louisiana Youth Orchestra. Being a part of the audience for the Louisiana Youth Orchestra allows students to see their peers in action on the stage.

Each participant is given an official BRSO musical passport. With each concert they attend, students fill out a new page of their passport and receive a stamp on the appropriate page. They fill out which countries they “visit” depending on the musical origin of the works they hear.

The program is now in its fourth year. It originally was conceived as a way to allow underserved students to attend the orchestra’s popular “Home for the Holidays” concert. It was later expanded to include nearly all the orchestra’s offerings
