Sister Eugenia Bonetti will speak about the global problem of human trafficking and local efforts to combat it at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, May 9, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 4727 McHugh Drive in Zachary.
Bonetti has founded numerous homes in Italy that serve as safe havens for women and girls who have been rescued from the sex trade in Europe.
She is in Baton Rouge speaking to legislators and law enforcement officials in support of plans to start a similar home here to treat underage victims of human trafficking.
The home will be funded by a nonprofit corporation created by the Rev. Jeff Bayhi, pastor at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. It plans to employ nuns trained by Bonetti.
The doors will open at 9 a.m. with coffee and juice, and the talk will begin at 9:30 a.m.
