Just when you think the holidays are almost over, think again.

In coming months, there’s Valentine’s Day, Mardi Gras, Easter, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, and, well, you get the picture.

If you’re a slow cooker fan, you might want to browse through “Holiday Slow Cooker” by slow-cooking enthusiast and author Jonnie Downing. It’s a family-friendly book that takes into account the fast-pace lives of today’s families.

Recipes are simple with easy-to-follow ideas for nearly every holiday, from the traditional to the nontraditional. Downing says that coming from a large family, she often watched as her mother became completely exhausted by the time dinner was served. She came to the conclusion that something had to change and Downing, after a time of doing just as her mother had done, began adapting recipes to her slow cooker.

Since New Year’s Day is just around the corner, I tried Downing’s recipe for Pork Loin With Wine Sauce. It was a difficult decision because I also liked the Piquant Black-Eyed Peas. There were a number of recipes that were tempting, which, in my book, makes a cookbook worth it.

I did cook my pork loin a bit longer that Downing called for. Since not all cookers cook equally, Downing has added the internal temperature measurement.

However, if the cook is not home, checking the temperature could be problematic. I found that cooking it for 6 hours was not a problem at all.
