During the summer months in Germany, this is an absolute favorite to be served (usually in a crystal glass punch bowl) at garden parties or while sitting on the balcony in the evenings. There are variations using fresh pineapple, made slightly differently, or other fruit.
1 lb. fresh German or Louisiana strawberries
1/4 cup sugar or less
2 bottles light white wine, chilled (e. g. Pinot Grigio or Savignon Blanc)
1 bottle champagne, chilled
Cut large fruit in half.
Soak strawberries in 2 glasses of the white wine and sugar for about an hour at room temperature or chill.
Add remaining wine and champagne. Keep cool.
Serve in stem glasses with strawberries in the bottom of each glass.
