Farmers Market sets tailgate competition

The Red Stick Farmers Market will celebrate 15 years in downtown Baton Rouge with its first Tailgating Throwdown competition from 8 a.m. to noon Nov. 5. Individuals and teams will compete in a cooking competition using local ingredients from the market, and shoppers can purchase a $15 tasting bracelet to sample the tailgating fare and vote for the People’s Choice award.

Deadline for team entries is Saturday. Cost is $100 per team, which includes $20 that can be used to purchase ingredients at the market.

Kids Dish cooking class planned Oct. 22

Tracey Koch and Stephanie Riegel will teach a Kids Dish cooking class from 11 a.m. to noon Oct. 22 at Whole Foods in Towne Center.

The menu will feature healthful Halloween snacks and surprises.The class is open to ages 7 to 12. Cost is $10, and space may be limited. To register, call (225) 218-0452.

Harvest Wine Dinner scheduled

Juban’s Creole Restaurant and Caterer is hosting a Harvest Wine Dinner to celebrate Charles Krug Winery’s 150th anniversary at 7 p.m. Oct. 20, with a reception beginning at 6:15 p.m.

The six-course wine dinner will feature Salmon Croquettes and Bacon-Wrapped Jumbo Shrimp With Green Tomato Jam with 2010 Sauvignon Blanc and 2008 Merlot; Roasted Eggplant Soup With Fried Oysters with 2009 Chardonnay; Seared Louisiana Lemon Fish, Browned Honey Sage and Brabant Sweet Potatoes with 2008 Pinot Noir; Wild Mushroom Stuffed Quail, Mint Julep Barbecue Sauce and Fingerling Potato Salad with 2007 Zinfandel; Grilled Filet of Beef Tenderloin, Jumbo Gulf Scallop, Marinated Asparagus and Rosemary Mint Pesto with 2005 Generations Meritage Blend; and Spiced Pumpkin Crème Brûlée with 2008 Zinfandel Port.
