Summer fun can mean lots of things, especially in the kitchen. The slow cooker is a great appliance for allowing young cooks to safely explore their creativity with food and be helpful at the same time.

It’s also a good way to keep the room temperature down in the kitchen and save on energy. Practicality and creativity can work hand in hand if you think about it. The practicality of summer is that time is a little more flexible and little ones are always creative. It just has to be encouraged.

Start with foods they like. Perhaps it’s pizza. Perhaps it’s hamburger meat. Chances are if they like hamburger, they would like cube steak. Introduce them to some of the different meats or food products and let them choose what they think would make it good.

Back to the cube steak and pizza. What about Pizza Steak?

Here’s a good slow cooker recipe you can try with your kids or grandchildren. The flavors will be familiar to them, and they’ll think it’s neat that you can put all the ingredients into the slow cooker and have a meal a couple of hours later.

Start by putting the cube steaks as a base in the bottom of the slow cooker and top with pizza sauce, green bell peppers, pepperoni, and onions if you like. Cook on Low and when cook time is complete, let younger cooks decorate with the cheeses of their choice.

Explore the cheese section of your local grocery store and maybe they might be interested in trying some of the ones they are not familiar with, like feta or goat cheese.

Project objective: Enjoy!
