Serves 12. Recipe is from Stephanie Riegel and Madeleiene Woolverton.

For the cake:

2 boxes devil’s food cake mix, prepared according to package directions and baked in 3 (9-inch) cake rounds (you will have extra … use it for cupcakes)

For the icing:

½ stick butter

1½ cups semisweet chocolate chips

12 tbls. heavy cream

2½ cups sifted confectioners’ sugar (more if needed)

2 to 3 tsps. vanilla extra

1. Let the prepared cakes cool completely and let your teenagers cut them into any kind of cool shape they desire, then let them stack or configure at will.

2. Make the icing by placing all ingredients in a heavy saucepan over low heat and whisk until smooth. Cool slightly, adding more sugar if necessary to achieve a spreading consistency. Spread on the cake while frosting is still warm, and have fun decorating in as creative a manner as possible.
