Cherry Cookies

Makes about 24 dozen cookies. Recipe is from Phine Bravata. This recipe is the one used to make the Cherry Cookies for the St. Joseph’s Altar at Cypress Springs Mercedarian Prayer Center.

2 cups sugar

6 eggs

2 cups shortening

8 cups all-purpose flour

8 tsps. baking powder

1 (16-oz.) jar maraschino cherries, chopped (reserve juice for coloring dough and icing)


Reserved cherry juice, for coloring

About 11/2 cups milk, or more

2 lbs. powdered sugar, or more

1. Cream sugar, eggs and shortening.

2. Blend in flour, baking powder and cherries. Some cherry juice may be added to batter for color.

3. Roll dough into 11/2-inch balls, being careful not to work the dough too much. Place on ungreased baking sheet and bake in a preheated 350-degree oven for 12-15 minutes. Cool.

4. To make icing: In a large bowl, gradually add cherry juice and milk to powdered sugar until desired thickness. Roll cooled cookies into icing mixture and place on waxed paper to dry overnight.
