I am having a really hard time staying on task these days as Christmas creeps ever closer.

When it came time to plan for the week’s cooking — for meals, company and homemade gifts — I found myself just staring at a stack of recipes hoping something would inspire me. It didn't.

By the time my Saturday trip to the farmers market and grocery shopping came around, I still hadn’t decided what I was making for any of the events I was committed to cook for.

So, while I visited with an old friend at the farmers market, I sent my daughter to shop. I decided I would be happy to cook whatever she found. I watched her go to each tent. She’s as regular a fixture at our market as I am.

When my clever girl came back, she had chosen chicken wings and some beautiful yellow and green cauliflower. With the battle of deciding on ingredients won, it was much easier to come up with some delicious and simple hors d’oeuvres for the parties ahead.

These wings are sweet and have a slight kick from the dry mustard. The cauliflower bites are cheesy miniature tarts with a rich, smoky flavor.

Soon, I hope, I’ll get my poor addled brain back on track. Until then I’ll just hang on and make lots of notes and lists, and let the kids help out more.

Here's wishing you all a wonderful holiday season!
