It’s berry season! That means blackberries and blueberries — and some berry funny puns — are ripe for the picking at farms across the state.

If you don’t want to pluck them yourself, pick up some berries at a farmers market while they’re sweet and ripe. If you’d like some Louisiana berries for later, flash freeze them as soon as you get them home.

These blueberry pies are made in ramekins and can be easily saved and served later. For the crust on top, you can weave the dough like a basket or simply place a small disc of dough on top of the pie then pierce it so the steam can escape.

The blackberry ice cream is nice and light. The lavender adds a refreshing note.

When my ice cream machine refused to churn, it was not berry funny. I guess 16 years is too much to ask of a small appliance. So, I froze the ice cream in a freezer-safe container. While slower than the ideal churning process, it got the job done.
