WHAT: Free health fair by Humana 

WHEN: 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. with healthy cooking demonstrations at 11 a.m. and 11:45 a.m. Wednesday, July 19

WHERE: Humana Guidance Center, 10330 Airline Highway, Baton Rouge

DETAILS: At 10:15 a.m., nurse Heather Diaz will give a talk on "Patience is a Virtue; Can it be Learned?" Chef Nino will do the healthy cooking demos and tastings during the health fair. Others participating include Lewy Physical Therapy; Senior RX Prescription Assistance with the Capital Area Agency on Aging; Lee Gaffney, Bold Goal representative; SB Wellness; blood drive with Blood Systems; blood pressure/BMI screenings; Stephen Aguillard, clinical services director at Capital Area Human Services District; memory screenings by Alzheimer Services.

Weight-loss session

WHAT: Free information session on weight loss, from diet to surgery

WHEN: 1 p.m. Wednesday, July 19

WHERE: Baton Rouge General, Conference Room 2, 8585 Picardy Ave., Baton Rouge


DETAILS: Registered dietitian Lauren Simon will discuss nutrition basics, including tips on how to avoid inflammation, how to cook without processed foods, and which foods are beneficial for your health. Then, bariatric surgeon Dr. Jonathan Taylor will speak about weight-loss surgery intervention, how to know if you’re a candidate and what to expect before, during and after the procedure. Event includes a free, healthy lunch.
