DETAILS: MINORITY DONORS ARE NEEDED TO GIVE BLOOD. 3 LIVES IS HELD IN PARTNERSHIP WITH AMERICA’S BLOOD CENTERS AND THE SICKLE CELL DISEASE ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA. IT IS CALLED 3 LIVES BECAUSE ONE PINT OF DONATED BLOOD CAN SAVE AS MANY AS THREE LIVES. ACCORDING TO THE SICKLE CELL DISEASE ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA, AFRICAN AMERICAN DONORS PROVIDE BLOOD WITH UNIQUE ANTIGENS THAT ARE VITAL FOR PEOPLE WITH SICKLE CELL DISEASE, WHICH AFFECTS MORE THAN 70,000 PEOPLE IN THE U.S. ALL THE BLOOD COLLECTED WILL GO TO LOCAL HOSPITALS AND MEDICAL CENTERS.
STROKES FOR STROKE
WHAT: Kayaking for strokes awareness event sponsored by the American Heart Association and the American Stroke Association and BREC.
WHEN: 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, May 22
WHERE: Baton Rouge Beach, Stanford Avenue
DETAILS: Free and open to the public, BREC will be on site with kayaks for anyone who wants to kayak, a low-intensity workout that is good exercise for stroke prevention or stroke rehabilitation. The associations will have information on strokes as well as rehabilitation specialists to work with those recovering from stroke. Stroke is currently the No. 4 killer in Louisiana and is the leading cause of serious, long term disability. A stroke can be caused either by a clot obstructing the flow of blood to the brain (ischemic strokes) or by a blood vessel rupturing and preventing blood flow to the brain (Hemorrhagic or bleeding strokes).
WHAT: HIV and syphilis testing.
WHEN & WHERE: Dr. Leo S. Butler Community Center, 950 E. Washington St., offers HIV testing from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays-Thursdays and syphilis testing from 2-4 p.m. on Wednesdays; Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center, 4000 Gus Young Ave., offers testing from 9 a.m. to noon on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Wednesdays and from 8:30 a.m. to noon on Fridays; Delmont Service Center, 3535 Riley St., offers testing from 2-4 p.m. every third Wednesday; and EKL Mid-City, North Foster at Gus Young Avenue, offers testing from 9-11 a.m. and 4-7 p.m. on Tuesdays.
